Check yourself! How often are you drinking water? Also, how much are you drinking? Are you drinking enough water for yourself, personally?
I drink a lot of water. I always have to go to the restroom, and during those hours when I've particularly had more water, I need to go multiple times in an hour. Yet, my lips are still tight and dry. My facial skin is fine, and I've had so much water, but why is it that my lips are always dry? Did I do something wrong?
To be honest, I don't really know. I feel like I have to hug jugs and jugs of water every minute if I want to maintain moisture in my lips. But in reality, sometimes drinking water isn't the priority at the moment, and human brains are horrible at registering thirst.
So, I started to dig around the Korean skincare market for lip treatments. I've tried American lip scrubs before, but I never really stuck with them because they just seemed so-so. While visiting Seoul, particularly Myeongdong, I saw so many lip masks in stores and I just had to try them. I wasn't able to buy them in Korea because I was on a budget (sadface), so I ordered them afterwards. The most well-known lip mask, I think, is TONYMOLY's Kiss Kiss Lovely Lip Patch because it seems to be the most marketed in blogs and Korean-American skincare sites. THE SAEM, NATURE REPUBLIC, THEFACESHOP, and others have lip masks as well.
After hunting some more, I found LANEIGE's Lip Sleeping Mask. Now, this is the holy grail for my lips. I still use the gel lip mask from time to time just because it's fun, but because I'm always thinking about long-term and consistent effects for my skin, I actually do favor this product much more. Let me explain each (the gel lip mask and the lip sleeping mask) separately so that it is more clear.
1. TONYMOLY Kiss Kiss Lovely Lip Patch
This gel-type lip patch is cute, easy to use, and fun! Created with fruit extracts and hydrolyzed collagen, this fruity lip patch really helps to moisten your lips and minimize deep lip lines (a sign of aging), especially when they are chronically dry. If you follow Korean beauty, you will know that both Lady Gaga and Jessica Alba are now big fans of this lip mask.
2. LANEIGE Lip Sleeping Mask
This is definitely my favorite lip product. Having gone through lip balms to chapsticks to lip treatments to lip scrubs, I haven't found something that maintains my lip moisture quite like this product. Not only does this product moisturize overnight, it also exfoliates my lips. In the morning, I just take a warm wet towel and gently apply pressure to my lips as I wipe the lip sleeping mask off. Off comes the remaining dead skin that gets in the way of my lipstick (some of the dead skin also gets dissolved by the formula), and it's a great feeling waking up with rejuvenated lips. This particular product is made with LANEIGE's Berry Mix Complex (raspberry, strawberry, cranberry, blueberry, gojiberry, soapberry, cloudberry and coffee berry are used to make your lips smooth and soft with the help of Vitamin C and antioxidants) and Moisture Wrap (hyaluronic acid is used to help restore skin damage by covering the skin with a Biopolymer mineral network as you sleep). I'd like to point out that I didn't see immediate results with this sleeping mask, but that is definitely not a bad thing in any way as I like my skincare to do better things over the long run. After two weeks, I started to notice that I didn't really think about how dry my lips were during the day because... they weren't! This didn't mean that I could be lazy on water, though! Did I also mention that the formula smells like a basket of berries and the product comes with a little lip spatula?
If you suffer from dry lips and haven't found a solution, give these lip masks a try! Now I don't ever have to be embarrassed about my dry, cracked lips. Not only that, I'm more willing to put on lipstick because my lips no longer look rough (I swear... lipstick makes that scaly, dry lip skin so obvious).
Ladies, what did you think? And gentlemen, just because you don't wear lipstick, doesn't mean that you should go out kissing a girl with dry, rough lips. :)
